Switching medications
Clinician-guided switching from Ozempic to Wegovy that keeps your goals on track.
Who benefits?
Some patients begin on Ozempic for diabetes and later consider Wegovy for weight management. If your goal is weight loss Wegovy may be the better fit. We’ll review your history, goals and tolerability, then confirm a safe plan.
Thinking about moving from Ozempic? Wegovy is Semaglutide licensed for weight management, with a gradual dose ramp to help manage side-effects.
Many people prefer it when their primary aim is sustainable weight loss.
It depends on your background, current Ozempic dose, side-effects and goals.
Our clinicians confirm your suitability, set your starting dose, and support your gradual step-up so you settle in comfortably with as few side-effects as possible.
Restart low, with no overlap and a short washout period, then step up slowly. Use this table as a quick reference only. Your clinician’s advice always comes first.
Stage | What you do | Weekly dose | Notes |
Last Ozempic dose | Take your final Ozempic injection, then pause. | N/A | Do not combine with Wegovy. |
Washout gap | Wait for a period of time (gap) set by your prescriber. | N/A | No injections during the gap. |
Weeks 1–4 | Start Wegovy once weekly. | 0.25 mg | Everyone restarts low after switching. |
Weeks 5–8 | If needed and tolerated, step up. | 0.5 mg | Minimum 4 weeks at each step. |
Weeks 9–12 | Consider next step if needed/tolerated. | 1.0 mg | Pause or step back if side-effects flare. |
Weeks 13–16 | Consider next step if needed/tolerated. | 1.7 mg | Stay at the lowest effective dose. |
Week 17+ | Only if still needed/tolerated. | 2.4 mg (max) | Clinician-guided maintenance. |

Individual results vary; we’ll tailor the plan to you.
Common questions
Nausea, reflux, constipation or diarrhoea can reappear during the switch from Ozempic to Wegovy. Eating smaller meals, slower eating and avoiding rich or fatty foods on dose day help. Contact a clinician if symptoms are moderate or persistent.
In some cases. Especially if you use insulin or a sulfonylurea as there’s a higher risk of low blood sugar when starting or stepping up. We’ll review your treatment plan and, if needed, coordinate dose changes.
Usually yes. Most people wait around a week so there’s no overlap. If you had recent nausea or heartburn, your clinician may extend the gap until symptoms settle.
Because Wegovy uses a different titration plan for weight management. Starting low again reduces side-effects and helps you find the lowest effective dose.
Most people do much better with Wegovy’s weight-management dosing and structured titration, but it’s important to note results can vary. The combination of dose, food habits, activity and sleep are what matters most.
Both Ozempic and Wegovy are once weekly injections. Read the new pen’s instructions on needle handling, priming, and dose display. Rotate your injection sites to abdomen, thigh and upper arm where possible.
